this city / ye shehar

translation in English, courtesy this fabulous blogger :)

through the sky scrapers
and blind alleys
you must walk alike
with a bowed head as you come
and welcome to the city where culture rose

of all the smiling faces you behold
bear those smiles
like you bore the cross
with a guarded heart as you greet
and welcome to the city of friendly foes

lords spin the lofty wheels of fortune
as men travel on foot
burdened with sins
watch your step as you cross this road
and welcome to the city of deathly blows

desire desolves and sanity yearns
as it revolves never to return
harried life waits forlorn
with the pamphlets of dreams stuck within
and welcome to the city of eternal gloss

Hey, I have been following your blog for a while now. I guess I have read better of your works.

This one looks so heavily inspired from 'Koi Dost hai, naa rakeeb hai' and 'Ek akela is shehar mein'.
I did like the last two lines, but I sure am saving my compliments in anticipation of your better write-ups.

:)

Brilliantly written. Keep up the superb work...

Cheers!!!!

and i'll agree with your other commenters on the last line... quite a hook for a re-read!

thanks for sharing your work, as always...

real impactful.. especially the last line.

PS: Is there some rule on the number of syllables in a line for ghazals that make all lines sound so much in sync with each other??

dreamt before
