remembering Premchand

July 31 was the birthday of one of the greatest Indian authors Dhanpat Rai, more popularly known as Munshi Premchand. this post is an attempt to compile some web resources about Munshi ji, to serve as an introduction to those who haven't read him before (especially the younger generation), and as a resource to those who would love to remember him more often.

am not writing a detailed introduction here, because one of my favorite bloggers has written this short but beautiful piece on his importance and relevance in our literature and in fact our lives. do read the post, "Premchand is important" here: http://goo.gl/yJh9w

here's a link to his page on wikipedia: http://goo.gl/1m7UE just don't read the story summaries in the end, they'll act as spoilers :)

for majority of his stories and one novel 'nirmala' click here, "Munshi Premchand's creations": http://goo.gl/awf18

and here's a link to download majority of his novels as pdf, "Munshi Premchand collection": http://goo.gl/H3j5f

these links are great resources for new readers though i would really request you to buy a collection of his stories and individual novels as paper books, there are many versions available from a variety of publishers. happy reading!

and in the end, a reminder of what we do to our artists: "Premchand's ancestral home crying for attention" a news report from the Times Of India here: http://goo.gl/ojZTU

hope you found this post engaging. thanks for taking the time.

disclaimer: more than a comment on the so-called westernization of the Indian society, it is a personal statement on loss of the traditions that make us Indians what we are. and the irony is, i'm writing this in English :)

night / raat

she came
and cleaned up
crumbs
fallen, flying
on the surface of the sky

will try to translate it as i feel it is easier this time :)

year's first verse dedicated to the love of my life. can't promise that i'll be able to translate this, but try i'll sure. love you all. and yes, may the new year be full of beauty and bliss :)

kahani

*दिहाड़ी - daily wages; **मीनाकारी - art of embellishment on solid surfaces; ^साकी - the cup bearer (bartender); ^^सफीने - boat; *^फ़लसफ़ा - philosophy; ^*मदीना - the Islamic holy city of Madina (with Kashi of Hinduism)

as of now, no English translation. working on it. begging, pleading, cajoling the benevolent powers involved :)

this city / ye shehar

translation in English, courtesy this fabulous blogger :)

through the sky scrapers
and blind alleys
you must walk alike
with a bowed head as you come
and welcome to the city where culture rose

of all the smiling faces you behold
bear those smiles
like you bore the cross
with a guarded heart as you greet
and welcome to the city of friendly foes

lords spin the lofty wheels of fortune
as men travel on foot
burdened with sins
watch your step as you cross this road
and welcome to the city of deathly blows

desire desolves and sanity yearns
as it revolves never to return
harried life waits forlorn
with the pamphlets of dreams stuck within
and welcome to the city of eternal gloss

its been so long / बहुत दिन हुए अब

translation coming up soon :)
and here it is

its been so long
since i heard the earth's heartbeat faint
neither teased sunshine
nor with the breeze i played

its been so long
since i tilled the clouds
neither sowed the seeds of rains
nor the crop of dreams i reaped

its been so long
since i talked with my love - the moon
either sculpted these words of mine
nor any feelings i strung

but... not anymore, not anymore
been too long it already is

the book / किताब

sky is nothing
but an ocean deep
and birds swim in it
with wings spread out

blue is the moon
like an anchor dropped in this heavenly sea
and i've promised, when i meet her next
will read her some passages from my favorite book

shshsh

don't tell her yet
that deeper than the sky and the sea
and more beautiful than the shimmering moon
it is her eyes, that i love reading most

i tried but could not translate it. maybe it cannot be. so here is a brief detail of what the poem tries to convey.
it tells you how last afternoon i saw some homes getting uprooted; some silent dreams being scattered; saw a life snuffed out in its prime and a benevolent presence over our heads leaving us for ever...how the afternoon yesterday, on the corner of my street, i saw a beloved peepal tree getting sawed.

a big stool made of wood
bigger than dreams' delight
three crates put over it
two empty, one full of eggs off-white
one side has the candies cool
pink, green, yellow and bright
the other has a matchbox
and cigarettes huddling in fright
and lo behold, a treat emerges for the eyes
the children's mart and a genuine price

the wanderer / बंजारा

sometimes i feel
that my feet
have a mind of their own
wherever, whenever
they move on, carrying
this body on their shoulders

after you leave / तेरे जाने के बाद

after you leave
i come back the whole way
which we crossed
a little while ago
picking up scattered moments
i fill my pockets, one by one
here, we laughed, for a reason without
here, we ran up the stairs, and breathless you were
and sitting on a seat like this, you'd put your head on my shoulder

after you leave
this small room, turns big and empty
i fold and keep away
the joys, you didn't wear this time
i keep on the table, once again
the words, that were left unsaid
and bookmark the dreams
that are to be worked upon

.
.
.
after you leave
the eyes still well up sometimes
in wait of the day
when you'll arrive, not to leave again

a song, एक गीत

those who can read Hindi, please do not read the English translation :)

one day,
i wrote
a song for you

when completed
it came to life
and divided itself
into many parts

one part turned into day
one became night
one part formed earth
and one unfolded as endless sky

one part became light
one became shadow
one lived a fruitful life
and one made death a reality

in no time
that song of mine
created this whole universe

one day i,
wrote a song
for you

and gave that song
the name of 'love'
